Michael ‘Mo’ Foster - 1944-2023

Last week we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our great friend and Mad Wasp supporter Mo Foster. An immensely witty man with a story for just about every occasion, Mo was also one of the UK’s most respected and in-demand session bass players.

In the 1960s, Mo formed progressive jazz/rock group called Affinity, before forging a live career playing with artists such as Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Joan Armatrading, Gil Evans, Gary Moore, Van Morrison with Dr John, Eric Clapton, Sting, Dusty Springfield, George Martin, Hank Marvin, Roger Glover, Geno Washington, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The London Symphony Orchestra.

As a studio musician, Foster played on over 400 albums and singles, including recordings with Gerry Rafferty, Brian May, Ringo Starr, Annifred Lyngstad of ABBA, Cher, Peter Green, Meatloaf, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Leo Sayer and Kenny Rogers. Mo was also a key part of Phil Collins’ backing band on his debut solo tour in 1982, in addition to contributing to his Hello, I Must Be Going! album.

Mo also co-wrote the1982 novelty Top 20 hit "Chalk Dust - The Umpire Strikes Back” by The Brat (aka the comedian Roger Kitter). Coincidentally this song was played on this week’s edition of DJ Andy Craik’s Choose The Choons show.

His film soundtrack work included two Bond films, For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy, as well as the TV shows Bergerac and Minder. In addition, he released five own solo albums and wrote a number of books, including British Rock Guitar, an amusing semi-autobiographical description of rock’s early days in Britain.

We will miss you at our regular Waffle Club Meetings Mo.

Cygnet Committee - fundraising event

The Cygnet Committee Band are organising a fundraising event / gig in July for the charity Myeloma UK.

The inspiration came from a friend of their singer who is suffering from multiple Myeloma. Jase Edwards is a musician and producer, and the lead guitarist in the band Wolfsbane. He was diagnosed at the end of Wolfsbane’s 2022 tour - most of which he spent playing sat down due to a broken back - a symptom of the cancer. He’s doing well and responding to treatment, but there is ultimately no cure for Myeloma and remission is not for ever. All cancer charities are worthy, but this one is close to the heart.

The gig will take place on Sunday 16th July at the Amersham Arms venue in New Cross, London. the Cygnet Committee will play, and hopefully at least one more. Get down there if you can!

Hit them up on Social Media and give them a follow!

Not all of us agreed - Harry Kappen

Dutch singer-songwriter and music therapist, Harry Kappen, releases his new single “Not All Of Us Agreed”. This song is an indictment of the rapid development of new technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, and the many questions it raises for human beings.

The lyrics of the song provide an avenue to think about our current and future interaction with technology. It questions the reality of the news we see, if we will one day communicate with our government only through robots, and whether humans will eventually turn into algorithms.

Harry Kappen is known for his thoughtful and profound lyrics, and this track is just the latest in a long line of emotionally charged songs. Last year, he released “Wargames”, an anti-war song in response to the Ukraine war. Early 2023 saw the release of “The Freedom Inside”, a song that is an invitation to individuals to consider the great global changes that are happening around them.

Harry Kappen is an independent musician and music therapist from the Netherlands. He’s an experienced and diverse musician who has played in many bands and has also served as a producer for a number of Dutch pop bands. Outside of his music career, Harry works as a lecturer in an international master’s degree in music therapy located in Rotterdam. There, he helps young kids and adolescents cope with a variety of issues and also assists families battling dysfunctional patterns.

MAD WASP WIPEOUT ON TWITTER!

UNBELIEVABLE!

As some of you will be aware, for reasons none of us at Mad Wasp Radio have any explanation for, our Twitter account has been permanently suspended for supposedly violating their terms of service.

Naturally, we have appealed this decision and have asked to be told the reasons for why this has happened but unfortunately all we get in response is a bot reply with no proper explanation.

As a result, we have been forced to create a new Twitter account - @MadWaspRadioMWR. Here you can find all our tweets about upcoming shows, programme information so please do follow us.

We will continue to make every effort to get an explanation from Twitter and hope to restore our original account at some time in the future.

We will keep you posted… and needless to say - if we find out who has caused this to happen ...

PORTOBELLO EXPRESS

Portobello Express are a Female fronted Psychedelic Heavy Blues-Rock Band founded in 2015 in Vienna (Austria).Vienna-based band Portobello Express are like a time portal into the golden age of the Psychedelic Heavy Blues Rock , exploring a sound that has its roots in the 60s and 70s and harnessing that era’s unique, raw energy whilst paying homage to their multicultural roots. “Portobello” is both a reference to London’s famed Portobello Road, the psychedelic mushrooms of the same name and singer Betty’s Italian heritage, whereas “Express” is a neat reference to “espresso” - an Italian staple - and trains and their sheer power. The band, which started off as a Sixties Cover band at a birthday party, has evolved to become a force that reminds us what it was like when Blues and Rock were in their heyday, with a powerful stage presence that unites the room.

Happy Betty (vocals, bass, keyboards and percussion) and Patrick Slowhand (guitar) are youth friends who reconnected again in Italy as adults and became a couple. They initially formed the band in 2010 and their broad influences have seeped into their music, giving them a sound that is both retro and fresh. Patrick has been heavily influenced by the British music scene, having played R’n’B for 30 years with his other Viennese band, The Jaybirds. Betty cites West Coast Psych Rock in the U.S. as a formative influence and they are both big fans of Black Sabbath.

Check out their bandcamp page here! And please keep the wonderful Wasp pics coming - always very much appreciated!

JOHN DREDGE & THE BALCONY SHIRTS BAND release debut single ‘Double Agent Working Alone’

Here's our very own John Dredge together with the Balcony Shirts with their debut indie guitar pop single - and we are sure you will agree that it is fabulous!

Double Agent Working Alone is a joyously catchy two-minute guitar-pop song conceived as a homage to the stylish spy thrillers of the sixties. The video also evokes memories of cinematic espionage, with the inclusion of a secret message and a mysterious multi-story car park.

The group were formed when singer/lyricist John Dredge met guitarist/producer/shop owner Scott Balcony in the Balcony Shirts garment printing and embroidery shop, deep in the heart of Uxbridge. Bassist Chris Taylor, additional guitarist Leigh Heggarty and drummer Bob Burgons were quickly recruited from the shop staff, and the debut single was actually recorded there despite constant interruptions from the customers. But what a result! Shop-based pop at its finest.

Double Agent Working Alone is available here! And you can check out The Balcony Shirts shop site here!

MAD WASP CROSS POLINATION
SOME OF THE AMAZING NEW TALENT PLAYED ON MAD WASP RADIO

We love to highlight some of the variety you will hear on Mad Wasp Radio and we are pleased to add music videos today from pMad The Band and The Metal Bryds - both wonderful bands that we play and who are very supportive of us too.

pMad - Sisters

Paul Dillon is a solo artist from Portumna, Co. Galway, Ireland named pMad.

Following a path of introspection with a unique view of the world and what we are doing to ourselves and the planet! 'Sisters' delves into the feelings we have, when people we love leave our lives too soon. Even with the devils and the demons that often inhabited their lives, those we love that have gone too soon have left such an impression in our lives and we are grateful for the path they have led us to.

Paul has been in bands The Suicidal Dufflecoats to The Greeting & now to pMad, and recorded ‘Sisters’ in the middle of a pandemic and it is created in collaboration with Ireland (Zedakube Recording), Germany (Protonaut Studio) & Mexico (Elith Mastering Labs) without ever being in the same room together.

pMad has received huge chart success, critical acclaim and played worldwide on radio and is a favourite of listeners at Mad Wasp Radio.

Find out more about pMad on their website or email them (email available on the website).

The Metal Bryds - Little Lies

The Metal Byrds band are born musicians. London born Suzanne Birdie, has a power-pop rock voice, that compliments Sly Rye's ripping rock riffs and lead guitar solos in every song! These catchy songs are a throwback to a time where female front-women dominated the radio waves with rocking sounds. A time where Hair Bands and Classic Rock & Roll ruled the world.

Their sound comes from individual influences over the decades. Sly Rye's guitar playing style has been influenced anywhere from classic rock all the way from metal to alternative rock. Suzanne's singing style is heavily influenced by all the great women in rock history. From Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks and Heart. They are not the typical cookie-cutter sounding rock band, and if you listen closely, you will hear a sound like none-other." says the band of creating songs together.

The Metal Byrds have received rotation on both international and national online and FM radio stations, including Mad Wasp Radio, and like us they have a growing fan base that keeps on growing. Songs from their latest album have risen up the radio charts to reach #1, they maintain at least one song on any given time on a top ten chart, every week since the beginning of 2020, as well as being featured on several explosive and popular Spotify playlists that feature other great up and coming Indie Rock bands and musicians.

Check their great music on The Metal Bryds website here!

MAD WASP RADIO WELCOMES NEW PRESENTER ANDY CRAIK

We are overjoyed to welcome Andy Craik to the Wasps Nest even though he hates wasps apparently! Andy was a mobile DJ in Manchester pubs, clubs and social events in the 1990s and with the onset of the internet he continued DJing as an online mix DJ – you can search for DJ Frankie Pigeon for examples of his early work.

In 2021 Andy became the host of film and TV music show Screen Sounds where he built up a loyal fanbase of listeners. After a year long hiatus that show returns in April 2023 on one of our monthly rotation slots.

Andy was 18 years old in 1990 so the 90s are a well-loved era of music. He is also well known as the host of 90s request show 'On This Day 90s' and now joins Mad Wasp Radio to host a brand new Saturday morning fun show 'Choose The Choons' which is a mix of year focussed choices and listener requests as well as numerous special features. We are really looking forward to it!

Andy truly loves all genres of music so don't be surprised to hear an eclectic mix that might include Rush, The Inspiral Carpets and Worzel Gummidge in the same show...and that's just episode 1.

You can contact Andy via his twitter page (there is a link on his page via our Team Page or find him at @andycraik and use the hashtags #ChooseTheChoons or #ScreenSounds. If you would like to get involved in his shows you can email him via choosethechoons@gmail.com or ScreenSounds@gmail.com

Andy says his DJ heroes are John Peel, Kenny Everett + Mark & Lard. He is thrilled to be hosting at a station where they all would have fit in perfectly.
